The RPA has been around since 1949, formed by some very prominent environmentalists of their time such as A. Starker Leopold, Herbert Mason, Emanuel Fritz and Richard Leonard. The founders of the RPA believed that it was very important to foster a balance of uses in the park system, including the preservation of park lands in their natural condition or their restoration to such a condition. |

The initial charter of the RPA was to support the acquisition and preservation of lands throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, but over the years RPA has narrowed its focus to environmental issues in the East Bay Region, primarily Alameda and Contra Costa counties. The underlying tenets of the RPA founders continue to guide the decision-making of the current Board of Directors of the RPA. |

The RPA board and its membership are dedicated to facilitating the acquisition, preservation and interpretation of existing and potential park lands in the East Bay region. To this end RPA is always seeking to establish and maintain strong relationships with environmental groups and public agencies in the East Bay. We enthusiastically encourage new members willing to support our efforts to come and join us. |
